We Blog. What about you? Do you Blog?

Teresa Almeida d'Eca, Barbara Dieu, Buthaina Al Othman:

"We blog. What about you? Do you blog?"

Abstract: Among the collaborative and interactive tools on the WEB, CMS (content management systems) hosting blogs are those that have awakened greatest interest as they offer much potential in education and language learning. Not only do they allow personal control and the possibility to publish online but also to create communities of practice around projects and themes. Come and make your debut in blogosphere. During this one and a half-hour audio-conference workshop, three webheads from different parts of the world will introduce you to blogs, illustrate the different types and show you how they have integrated them into their everyday EFL practice. Time and connections permitting, we will start a blog together to continue interacting with you after the conference!

Alexander: Nice to meet everyone today on-line.

SusNyrop: we all saw your faces

Chair: The eraser is not a good idea, bec. we always think it's for individual objects as in RL

MayaB: Avery rough idea

Nelly: Not really

Chair: wow! great, Nora!

Chair: mic, Nora

Chair: audio please

Miguro: FA blog is a web page , practically that is all I know

Chair: Nora, no sound

Chair: Release the touch nora

Alexander: Alexander: it`s a kind of a journal on the net, I think.

Chair: slow connection speed in Minsk

Chair: That's the kind of audience we need for today with very little knowledge about blogs. good

MayaB: a log book = a journal?

Chair: yes, maya

helenz: It's my first experience of blogging.

MayaB: These words made their way into dictionaries last year

Chair: So we are all bloggers right now

SusNyrop: Karen - you're here now, we're now a lot of Webheads here!

Chair: you go beyond the classroom walls

ElizabethHa: lots of free writing, and authentic writing

venny: is there a seat limit?

Chair: No

SusNyrop: and world citizens

venny: Jeff has some prob to log in.

Chair: You are welcome, Venny

Chair: any comments so far?

Chair: Who owns the blog and for how long?

venny: Jeff is coming

MayaB: Welcome, latecomers

Chair: Hi, Karen..

AnneFox: Hi Teresa

Chair: What will be the best place to start a blog?

Chair: Hola Karen

Chair: Karen, can we meet today, please?

ElizabethHa: individual students can open their own.

chenyaodong: hi

ElizabethHa: Or the teacher can start one for students to use

kgarcia: Glad to be here!

Chair: Hello Everyne, Thanks for joining us today in Minsk

MayaB: Motivation is always a topical issue, true

Chair: hello jeff!

Chair: waves to Jeff

venny: Hello, Jeff!

Chair: waves to jeff from Lisbon

Chair: Hello Dong. Nice to meet you!

chenyaodong: most students in our college study english in order to pass exams.

Anatoli: how do I start blogging in class

Chair: Can I comment on this slide too, Bee?

SusNyrop: Hi Jeff - another Webhead!

chenyaodong: grid, i found my way in at last.

Chair: They are going to explain it

venny: Jeff just gets audo but not the window

jbcoops: got it

ElizabethHa: Chen--global practice is always a good way to enhance language proficiency

ElizabethHa: So it applies to improving for exams too.

Chair: Bee, can I show a page; an online Handout for my students on blogs

Darya: Unfortunately we have no opportunity to use it, but it would be really great

Chair: Hi Elizabeth!

ElizabethHa: Darya--do you have no Internet connection?

jbcoops: This topic is exactly like what I did with my students in Richmond 10 years ago. They were published internationally.

Chair: I started two blogs with my university students in Minsk

ElizabethHa: Be sure to minimize the window again, Bee

Darya: in my class - no!

Chair: i have it, bee

Chair: still loading

Chair: yes, we got it

ElizabethHa: Darya--you don't use it in class

venny: I have two questions? is it right time
to ask now?

ElizabethHa: It's like journal writing--done at home

Chair: yes

SusNyrop: many schools would have a school library where they have access to computers, too

Chair: Good remark Elizabeth

SusNyrop: hahah

SusNyrop: having fun!! That's not allowed

Chair: In my clases, creating blogs is a hands-on activity, we create them together

MayaB: And how about the trendy idea of edu-tainment?

kgarcia: Ho do we learn the technical requirements of the blog?

Chair: mine is small, liz

kgarcia: like how to have postings mail to you?

kgarcia: add linkages?

kgarcia: and all the potential features of the blog?

ElizabethHa: Trial and error is good?

Chair: the technical requirements Karen? What do you mean?

kgarcia: how to use the features available.

kgarcia: customizing it...

Chair: we will be doing this the second workshop

kgarcia: ahh, I see.

SusNyrop: Dear Karen - you missed part of the introduction , and we're getting to the details later

Chair: how much time do we still have?

Chair: What would be the best place to go blogging?

ElizabethHa: Bee--most of the middle of the page is blank.

ElizabethHa: Is that supposed to be?

Chair: 30 mins, I think

Chair: blank?

Darya: do you mean we can use it separately at home without any connection to the internet?

SusNyrop: I had to scroll down to find the postings Elizabeth

Chair: you can post to your blog by mail

Chair: no, we need a connection, Darya

SusNyrop: Darya, you might write in a text document at home, and save it to a disk you bring to school

SusNyrop: but that's risky because of virus infection perhaps

MayaB: Are blogs virus-protected?

Chair: I cannot project the page!

Darya: thanks for the explanation

venny: How do yo project a webpage here?

Chair: No, Maya, they're not

Chair: ok , Buth. let's proceed then

SusNyrop: they're online, this means you don't save anything on your PC. But I hane not heard about virus problems with blog tools.

Chair: venny: tools>web>send participants to...

kgarcia: Yes... in fact that is an interesting case....

ElizabethHa: You might get a spammer who sends to your e-mail.

SusNyrop: Only moderators can project Venny

kgarcia: Blogs are scary to many administrators

Chair: Tere, can we project actually, or is it only Bee who can?

Chair: we can Buth, I think

kgarcia: because speech is free and not controlled

ElizabethHa: The e-mail send is optional, however.

SusNyrop: moderators can project URLs

jbcoops: I taught 9th graders who read at 3rd grade level.... and had them write autobiographical incident papers using Bay Area Writing Project guidelines.

chenyaodong: my classes have started to post their movie comments/reviews on www.imdb.com. is that a kind of blog, too?

Chair: thanks, Tere and Sus

SusNyrop: but please warn anytime you project a page

SusNyrop: it stops all I'm doing ecah time you project

Chair: we have 20 min to go

Chair: Sus, we need to project a few. sorry. close them as we go, pls

Chair: thank you Sergei...

norbellam: Yes, I can see both blogs

jbcoops: Buthaina... you misspelled "definitions"

Chair: Thanks, Jeff..will fix that later

venny: why do you use blogger?

Chair: yes

jbcoops: I wrote an article explaining the process in my article "Building 21st Century Collaborative Learning Communities" at http://snurl.com/netc1 ... students were published around the world, and it really led to higher motivation for writing.

kgarcia: course given in Learnintg Times... the Learning Classroom

SusNyrop: I now have 6 browser windows open, so I will bookmark them and close again to avoid overload

MayaB: Learner blogs is probably what most of us are interested in

ElizabethHa: The teacher-student blog might be used to help with grammar problems, corrections, etc.

ElizabethHa: Also brainstorm for a group project.

SusNyrop: How come that grownups are always asking for children's age, but kids are not supposed to know how old WE are?

jbcoops: You could also incorporate another program like Inspiration to help them brainstorm, organize, create their blogs.

Chair: Sus, they can know my age in my web page. i just want to aoruse their curiosity, or guess, and have F.U.N.

Chair: in class, I mean

MayaB: How about publishing highlighted Ss' mistakes? We don't want to be unethical. How can we make notes individually?

chenyaodong: Hi, Grid. How many of your colleagues from Belnate are now with us here right now?

venny: How do you evaluate studets' works?

chenyaodong: Venny, that is a good question.

chenyaodong: i have over 100 students and I find it hard to correct their writing online.

Chair: What would be the best place to start a blog?

MayaB: Wouldn't some of the students prefer to stay anonymous while giving feedback on what was done at the lesson and how it was done?

Chair: I only made comments on mistakes once, bec. they were incredible. i make comments in private. i'm more worried about students writing and become as fluent as possible, not so much in mistakes. this is for maya

Chair: Venny, I give bonus points, since Ss are not required to do this kind of work online.

ElizabethHa: Sergei--they'll get to that

MayaB: Thanx, Tere

venny: how do you know their efforts?

therink: Hi all, just come in from teaching my grammar class.

ElizabethHa: Alex--have you noticed what?

Chair: bee, we have about 15 mins

Chair: please release the audio alexander...thank you

Chair: However, Venny, this semester in one class supported , i.e., for the Remedial class, so I give 5% on the Students all over work online, throughout the semester; I hope this answers your question, Venny

Chair: ok now

ElizabethHa: Maya--with freewriting, mistakes should not be corrected

ElizabethHa: Instead you want to comment on content/meanings

therink: It's Stephan, Yes I am in the far West of Germany

ElizabethHa: Mistakes/errors are an indication of where a student is in the language acquistion process.

ElizabethHa: So you want to address them in the class.

ElizabethHa: Instructed SLA

Chair: Hi Stephan!

MayaB: Elizabeth, I had portfolios of academic papers in mind

chenyaodong: to the point, Ha.

therink: Hi there, I hope I haven't mnissed too much

ElizabethHa: The academic papers would probably not go in a blog

jbcoops: I had a special education student who I started a dialectic journal with her mother via email. Within two weeks her sentence length doubled.

venny: yep, portfolio can do somethign like blog

venny: if paper can do, why blog?

Chair: Stephan, you have missed a lot!!! ;-)

SusNyrop: Welcome Stephan, I'm in Denmark, north of Copenhagen - is almost over, and then we have another soon after

Chair: But you can hear it later

MayaB: I was thinking of portfolios of academic papers, Elisabeth

ElizabethHa: You could have students post their writing in a wiki instead

therink: cool, how can I listen to it later

ElizabethHa: where you can comment point by point

Chair: the link will be posted later in the BelNATE YG, I think, Stephan

ElizabethHa: Academic papers wouldn't go in a blog, I would think.

therink: Brilliant

venny: blog guest!

MayaB: I see, Elizabeth

SusNyrop: Stephan, I guess the recording will be available from the LearningTImes page

venny: why not live gust but blog guest?

jbcoops: I'm off to bed... past 5a.m. here... need at least a few hours sleep.

Chair: we got it!

SusNyrop: see you soon again Jeff

Chair: Goodnight, Jeff, and thanks for coming

Chair: bye, jeff! thanks fro coming

ElizabethHa: Maya--students could work on drafts of an academic paper--for content purposes, not grammar work.

Chair: Bye jeff. Thanks for coming

ElizabethHa: So teams might discuss the ideas

Chair: Interesting! Good Idea!

jbcoops: G'nite all... please take a look at the first couple paragraphs of http://snurl.com/netc1 if you get the chance.

ElizabethHa: Blogs are perfect for global comments, wikis for grammar comments

Chair: Yes, we have 12 mins

ElizabethHa: It's a good paper, Jeff

chenyaodong: http://beeonline.blogspot.com/2003/08/hello-everyone-i-am-new-mystery-weblog.html doesn't work here for me.

ElizabethHa: Blogspot is slow

ElizabethHa: And it shows up with weird windows for me today

ElizabethHa: I think we talked about that yesterday in session 1

Chair: www.handybits.com

therink: Sorry I forgot

Chair: www.audblog.com

AnneFox: Apologies I have to go. I promised faithfully to pick up my girls in 20 mins.

AnneFox: Bye

Chair: thank you for coming anne

AnneFox: Thank you

MayaB: Bye B. Many-many thanks.

Chair: bye, Anne. nice to have you here :-)

kgarcia: There is an audio blog here in Learning Times with the Puerto RIcan Studies Association...

Chair: Wow!!!

Chair: Bye, Anne, and thanks for coming

kgarcia: you could just record voice with your computer, make a wav file and attach it to the blog..

MayaB: Sorry B, I meant to say good-bye to A (Anne)

venny: you can upload pic file to a blog.

SusNyrop: see you very soon Anne!!

chenyaodong: I met Vance while he was in China in July.

kgarcia: yes, with pictures and sound you can make a wonderful ethnography

Chair: for stories she has written, Renata, i mean

Chair: is this Yaodong?

SusNyrop: adn I'm going to meet Anne in ten days!!

ElizabethHa: Yes, chen--we saw the pictures that Vance sent while with you.

ElizabethHa: It was great!

SusNyrop: yes - Yaodong Chen is with us here!

chenyaodong: Sus, Anne is in Danmark ?

SusNyrop: yes

norbellam: Sorry I have to leave. I have a class in ten minutes-

Chair: is chenyaodong Yadong in China?

Chair: it's worth taking a look at renata's photo blog

ElizabethHa: Bye Nora--good talking to you

therink: have fun, norbellam

SusNyrop: Bye Norbella!

norbellam: It was very interesting

Chair: i don't think so

chenyaodong: Eli, did you see vance eating vegetarian food with us?

MayaB: 5 min

kgarcia: Yes project it Bee.....

ElizabethHa: yes indeed

ElizabethHa: Tere--it may load very slowly, but try it

Chair: oh, ok..it's Eli..hi

kgarcia: YEAH show renata's work!!!1

Chair: http://infodesign.no/artikler/Videoblog_with_Blogger_211004.html

chenyaodong: thx, Bdieu.

SusNyrop: a Pod is a handheld player

chenyaodong: great!

therink: Pods are still quite expensive though...

NataliaL: disadvantages of blogs?

SusNyrop: sounds like an exciting toy - I think I will need one when they get cheaper

Chair: you decide! ;-)

kgarcia: that is a good idea, to have an overall plan for the blog!

SusNyrop: Disadvantages of blogs, a good question Natalia

MayaB: Great slides, Barbara!

Chair: Irina, after what we have shown, what do you think may be disadvantages?

venny: time consuming

Nelly: Don't you think that using blogs might distract students from learning english? What if students get so envolved with creating blogs, visual images that they forget about their primary goal, english?

Chair: i don't think so, nelly

Darya: rather exciting

jchaupart: Bravo Barbara, Teresa and Buth

Chair: voice please

kgarcia: hey, where is the comments sheet!!!

Chair: Thank you, Sergei and all the EFL instructors in Minsk for listening and sharing

Chair: they *are* learning English through blogs, nelly

chenyaodong: very successful,Grid!

Chair: thank you, Sergei, Bee and Buth, and all participants

ElizabethHa: Nelly, If they are writing in English, they are learning.

Chair: Thanks, Bee and Tere

ElizabethHa: Nelly--you can require the writing part if it is not coming up naturally.

SusNyrop: who says learning English language would be their primary goal, Nelly - if blogs give them a voice they will use it with the language they prefer :-)

Chair: Please, some one stop a recording in a couple of mins

Chair: ok

ElizabethHa: What is a board system?

chenyaodong: good question,venny!

Chair: yes...these are great

Chair: but you need more technical competence there

SusNyrop: who attacks, venny?

Chair: Someone forgot the Hands icon on!!

SusNyrop: advertisers?

chenyaodong: ads attack?

ElizabethHa: there is a lot of advertising.

Chair: venny, i'd like to give my opinion, but no time, sorry!

venny: OK

BobZwick: that may be a big problem with public blogging

chenyaodong: who controls the timing here?

therink: I think advertising is the necessary evil till we are funded well enough for systems without advertising

ElizabethHa: The moderators control the whiteboard Yaodong

chenyaodong: Barbara, this is a beautiful page.

therink: Or till we are all trained to set it all up ourselves

ElizabethHa: Or we pay for the blog

jchaupart: Tu es brillante, Barbara!

SusNyrop: well, we have ads everywhere, even students need to learn how to deal with them and not click on things th
ey don't need

Chair: venny, yes, do send your comments to our blog

SusNyrop: see you in room 4

therink: I agree Sus

therink: See u there

SusNyrop: bye for now

jchaupart: je te fais une grosse bise de fpelicitatiojns

Chair: merci JM

Chair: see you next room!!! nice trip! ;-)

venny: how can I get a room in LT? at least you have 3 rooms?
